Windows Server 2022 LTSC, Version 21H2 Build 20348.768 | 4.9 Gb
Microsoft has released a cumulative update for Windows Server 2022 (KB5014678), raising the OS build to 20348.768. Having previously only made the option available to "seekers", Microsoft has now rolled out the ability to use WLS2 distros in Windows Server 2022 to anyone who is interested in the functionality.
Last month, Microsoft released a preview of an update that brought Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 distro support to Windows Server 2022. Now this update has been made generally available, following the release of the KB5014678 update. To enable the feature, you need to run wsl –install from a PowerShell window with administrator privileges.
June 14, 2022 — KB5014678 (OS Build 20348.768) - Release Date: 6/14/2022
IMPORTANT On May 19, 2022, Microsoft released an out-of-band (OOB) update to address an issue that might cause machine certificate authentication failures on domain controllers. If you haven’t installed the May 19, 2022 or later releases, then installing this June 14, 2022 update will also address that issue.
Improvements
This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5014021 (released May 24, 2022) and also addresses the following issues:
- Addresses an elevation of privilege (EOP) vulnerability under CVE-2022-30154 for the Microsoft File Server Shadow Copy Agent Service. To become protected and functional, you must install the June 14, 2022 or later Windows update on both the application server and the file server. The application server runs the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)-aware application that stores data on the remote Server Message Block 3.0 (or higher) shares on a file server. The file server hosts the file shares. If you don’t install the update on both machine roles, backup operations carried out by applications, which previously worked, might fail. For such failure scenarios, the Microsoft File Server Shadow Copy Agent Service will log FileShareShadowCopyAgent event 1013 on the file server.
Windows 10 servicing stack update - 20348.733
This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.
Windows Server 2022 is the new long-term servicing channel release of Windows Server for on-premises data centers and virtual machines. The two main editions are Standard and Datacenter. While the two editions of Windows Server 2022 offer the same core server features that build on existing Windows Server functionality, there are some differences around how they support Hyper-V virtual machines and how they manage networking and storage.
If you're building a virtual infrastructure, then you will need to choose Datacenter, as it adds support for unlimited VMs (Standard only supports two), along with shielded Hyper-V VMs for enhanced isolation and security, and support for both software-defined networking and storage.
