It's a superb performance, featuring compositions from the late '60s and early '70s recorded on albums like Crisis and Science Fiction. In fact, the version of "Rock the Clock," one of Coleman's wilder songs, is arguably superior to the official one on the latter album. The group performs Charlie Haden's "Song for Che" in a fashion close to the original Liberation Music Orchestra rendition, including the interpolation of a Spanish protest song during the composer's solo.

Tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman is especially prominent here, with powerful solos utilizing his unusual vocalized style on several pieces, and Ed Blackwell is a joy throughout. But the real stars are the compositions themselves, which are wonderful vehicles for inspired improvisation. Coleman picks up his bandmate's lines as if in mid-thought and extends them seamlessly. The brief period that saw him create Crisis, Broken Shadows, and Science Fiction is certainly one of his most turbulent and richly rewarding. Very highly recommended.
