As a rule, David Sanborn's Elektra output of the '90s had integrity. Whether he was being exploratory and introspective on Another Hand or taking a more commercial, R&B-minded approach on Inside, Sanborn avoided recording outright schlock during that decade. Make no mistake: Inside is far from straight-ahead acoustic jazz.

The Shaham siblings play Dvorak's Sonatina, wonderful music with great tones recorded with great clarity! The piano sound is remarkably clear and sharp sounding and no introduction needs to be said about the incredible violin tone displayed here. DG really did an amazing production on this recording. The violin is played with incredible warmth and awesome phrasing, every heartfelt note is carefully shaped by a master craftsman: Gil Shaham shows yet again his ability to speak with every note. The piano is played with a great sense of dynamics and effortless technique while never being obtrusive. Orli shows great maturity in how she handles and shapes the music with her great hands.

Although Dave Weckl is an excellent drummer, not all of his recordings have been excellent. In the 1990s, you never knew if you would find something exciting or mundane on a Weckl album. But this fusion/soul-jazz disc turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Synergy, in fact, is the drummer's most consistently satisfying CD. Excessive producing was a major problem on some of his previous releases, but this time he generally avoids overproducing and goes for a real band sound. Joined by tenor and soprano saxman Brandon Fields, keyboardist Jay Oliver, guitarist Buzz Feiten, and electric bassist Tom Kennedy, Weckl has a solid team to work with and emphasizes improvisation and honest-to-God playing not high-tech studio gloss.

This Naxos CD was recorded in March 1995 in the Concert Hall in Katowice and contains a very good performance of that old warhorse, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 in B flat minor, Op.23. The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra sound just great thanks to the producer Günter Appenheimer and, particularly, conductor Antoni Wit. Pianist Bernd Glemser has plenty of fire when needed coupled with delicacy as appropriate. It's a really good performance.

This is the album debut from the Nash Ramblers, Emmylou Harris' acoustic backing band featuring Sam Bush and Roy Huskey, Jr., recorded over three nights in the former home of the Grand Ole Opry. Harris' choice of songs strikes a balance between hillbilly classics and folk-influenced rock, with Bill Monroe receiving the heaviest tribute but sharing space with Tex Owens, Bruce Springsteen, and John Fogerty.

Classic Rock, Blues-Rock, Southern Rock

Gov't Mule's sound is a throwback to the '70s heyday of Southern rock, and their style is peppered with references to the best of the Allmans, with a liberal dose of early ZZ Top thrown in for good measure. Their second album shows no signs of a sophomore slump, featuring playing and songwriting every bit as strong as their debut outing. Warren Haynes' guitar work, if anything, is even more adventurous this time around, particularly effective on the opener "Blind Man in the Dark," "Thelonius Beck," and "Birth of the Mule."

This 1997 CD contains some of the most rewarding Dixieland ever recorded. On November 27, 1943, cornetist Wild Bill Davison, trombonist George Brunies (in peak form), clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, pianist Gene Schroeder, rhythm guitarist Eddie Condon, bassist Bob Casey, and drummer George Wettling cut a classic version of "That's a Plenty," along with three other songs that show just how exciting the style can be. Also on this CD are Davison's other Commodore sessions as a leader, 24 titles in all that include such outstanding players as clarinetists Edmond Hall, Joe Marsala, and Albert Nicholas; trombonist Lou McGarity; pianists Dick Cary and Joe Sullivan; and drummers Danny Alvin and Dave Tough…

Moom is recommended to fans of Hatfield and the North, Frank Zappa, and the Canterbury side of fusion, being heavily influenced by the sounds of the original Canterbury scene.
Born in Northampton, Moom started off as a coalition of members from other bands. Andy Fairclough, Greg Myles, and Jim Patterson had previously been in a group called Medicinal Compound, and Kristian Hartridge was playing with the group Blim, based in Birmingham. In 1992, Hartridge relocated to Northampton, and at this time Rob Falmer and Toby Kay joined the group and Moom was formed…

It is something of a mystery why Bach, usually alive to opportunities to make known his mastery of various musical forms, never published the English Suites (nor, come to that, the Well-tempered Clavier or the Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue), which represent a peak of his keyboard writing particularly in the Sixth Suite that he never excelled. Colin Tilney certainly takes his assignment au grand serieux, and earns our respect for his thoughtful approach, his firm rhythmic control even in the huge initial fugue of Suite No. 6 while avoiding inflexibility (with subtle phrasing that clarifies structure), his crisp ornaments, his stylishly discreet embellishment of repeats (virtually all of which he makes), and his general air of solid command.

This Naxos CD was released in 1998 and features 1995 recordings of Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 4 with the considerable bonus of the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op.43. As is often the case with Naxos orchestral recordings of this vintage, the sound is a little distant but opens up to reveal more than adequate engineering at higher volume levels.

Too Slim & the Taildraggers' 1992 release is a solid, foot-stomping collection that appropriates numerous electric blues styles, but rarely seems hackneyed. While his singing is adequate, it's really Tim "Too Slim" Langford's fret-flying guitar playing that keeps the bus on the road. Throughout "Bone of Contention" and a furious "Shake 'Em on Down," Langford channels Stevie Ray Vaughan while nodding to Robert Cray and the boogie blues of ZZ Top. Texas blues seems to run deep on El Rancho Grundgé. It's in the smoky air of a billiards room during the lowdown and dirty shuffle "Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired" and in the swagger of "Lowdown Hoedown," which suggests – in a good way – SRV's "Look at Little Sister."

Wes Montgomery recorded exclusively for the Riverside label during the four years covered by this massive 12-CD box set and, although his later albums for Verve and particularly the pop/jazz A&M dates sold many more copies, it is from his Riverside dates that his legacy was primarily formed. Virtually unknown at the time of his debut on Riverside, Montgomery soon became a major influence whose style is still copied decades later.
