In the course of his illustrious career, the Soviet composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote seven symphonies. The first of these, the Classical Symphony, dates from 1917, and the last from 1951. As for the Second and the Third, they were written in 1924 and 1928 respectively. Both were composed in Paris, at the time ofcultural effervescence that was 'the roaring twenties'. The musician's intention at the time was to become a French citizen.
As Prokofiev indicated in his autobiography, the Second Symphony in D Minor carries ‘a certain influence of Parisian atmosphere' of the period, ‘when neither complications nor dissonances were feared’. Op.40’s audacious language recalls the high tension of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring or the Scythian Suite of Prokofiev. Savagery and furore battle ceaselessly, mechanical rhythms and polytonal lines are expressive of the advice given to this former pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov by the poet Mayakovsky: ‘Let all hell break loose in a devilish din’.
Concerning structure, this ‘iron and steel fresco’ is modelled after Beethoven’s incomparable Piano Sonata Op.111. It is thus in two movements. The first, Allegro, is particularly aggressive, moving forward with uncommon nervous energy. Six highly brilliant variations constitute the second part, with a glowingly orchestrated finale. The fifth variation has been said to resemble the beginning of Petrouchka, Stravinsky's famous ballet, a comparison not much appreciated by Prokofiev.
