Voûtes (1988) is written for a percussion sextet: it aims at being a conscious study of the extrasonorous deviations of the percussive world. Considering the enigmatic concept of sound from an artistic point of view, Levinas wished to express that "which is beyond" percussion in this triptych. Directly issued from the laughter aesthetic used in Les Rires du Gilles (1981), this piece evokes the spinning fall and striking gleam of a brass instrument within the deforming resonance of a vault. The rhythmic polyphony is vocal in essence: is it not limited to a presumptive and primary scansion of a basic meter, but attempts to reach the new metaphorical styles that "make sound". Three short pieces express this experimental gesture of an "acousmatic" nature: the first - sob - plays on the interference or collapsing of the sonorous bodies that have been made to vibrate in modulated sympathy (Chinese vases and snare drum). The second - vault - plays with the actual flesh of sound and its various corollary codes at articulation level. The third - pulverize - offers a poetical exercise of atomizing and fragmenting. Thus, thanks to the degree of kinetic invention, the instrumental source must remain mysteriously unidentifiable.
