"The CDs contained in this box set were conceived and produced as part of the project ""Il mandolino a Napoli nel Settecento”, coordinated by the University of Bologna in collaboration with the University of Uppsala and the Neapolitan Mandolin Academy (www.mandolinonapoli700.com). The objective of the project was the recording on period instruments of the 19 compositions for mandolin by Neapolitan composers of the eighteenth century, whose manuscripts are collected in the Gimo collection and preserved in the ""Carolina Rediviva"" Library of the University of Uppsala. The two CDs include the works by Giovanni Battista Gervasio (CD1), and Emanuele Barbella, Gioacchino Còcchi and an anonymous (CD2). The production aims to offer the listener a new interpretation of this repertoire based on an interpretative concept sensitive to the quality of sound, phrasing and aesthetic and compositional concepts of the time, contributing to a more extensive rediscovery of the Neapolitan and southern Italian instrumental repertoire of the eighteenth century. This CD box was born thanks to the fruitful collaboration between the University of Bologna and the Museum of San Colombano – Tagliavini Collection, that hosted most of the recordings and made available the precious instruments of its collection."

Today we know that the reason for this penetration of Italian musical tastes into the small principality of Weimar lay elsewhere: the passion of the young prince Johann Ernst of Saxony for the Venetian concertos (and those of Vivaldi in particular). During the prince’s long period of study in Amsterdam, he had occasion to enjoy the exhibitions on the organ in the local Nieuwe Kerk by the blind virtuoso Jan Jacob de Graaf.

"Since 2010 the Associazione La Cantoria has dedicated its energies to the rediscovery of unpublished musical compositions from Rome, transcribing, studying and performing these both live and recording them under the Tactus record label. This cd is dedicated to the musician, composer and organist Francesco Giovannini who was chapelmeister at the Church of Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli in the 18th century, and whose works are conserved in the archives of the Order of the Clerics Regular of the Mother of God in Rome. The best way to understand and appreciate a liturgical musical composition is to savour it the very same context where it was born and for which it was conceived. This is what this CD intends to do; to allow us to live the sonorous experience of an ancient mass of the Roman rite. These late-Baroque compositions by Francesco Giovannini shine like precious gems set in an antique piece of jewellery made of Gregorian chant, readings, and orations where the organ is heard almost fleetingly in those moments when the sound of the voice and other instruments is superfluous or even prohibited."

An interesting and goliardic representation of Bologna at the beginning of the seventeenth century is proposed to us by the Dramatodia theatrical company directed by Alberto Allegrezza and with the participation of Enrico Bonavera. The theme is the Carnival, the texts are by the storyteller, writer and poet Giulio Cesare Croce and the music by the brilliant and non-conformist Olivetan friar Adriano Banchieri. The irresistible combination formed by these two authors stages an irreverent and paradoxical triumph of hyperbole, satire, jokes and double meanings, which find their expression - at the same time popular and artistic - in the dramaturgic representations linked to the commedia dell'arte and in the musical forms of the time such as the villanella, the canzonetta and the ballet.

At the dawn of the 19th century, the guitar was a very widespread instrument both in courtyards and living rooms. Vienna and Paris were cultural centers of great appeal, attracting artists and musicians from all over Europe. The transcription of operatic pieces was a common practice and intended for those who wished to remember, listen to and in some way perform the beautiful pieces heard in the theatres. In this release there are arias and cavatinas by more or less known authors, all linked to the Neapolitan school; the transcriptions were done by François Doisy, Anton Diabelli, Mauro Giuliani, Roger Dias, George Henri Derwort, and many of them are recorded here for the first time. The soprano Alessandra Borin performs this “bel canto” florilegium with an incredible ductility of her vocal technique, accompanied by Alessandro Marchiori playing a copy of the historical guitar Etienne Lapravotte (ca 1830), built by the luthier Gabriele Lodi di Carpi (Modena - Italy).

On this of Alessandro Scarlatti's opera omnia for keyboard, once again the star is the eighteenth century Italian Anonymous Ferrarese harpsichord owned by Francesco Tasini. Extremely interesting is the interpretation by Francesco Tasini - a master of the period performance practice - that succeeds in giving us a perfect understanding of the correct approach to the compositions by Alessandro Scarlatti, true founder of the Neapolitan keyboard School.

The recording of the third book of madrigals by Biagio Pesciolini, from Prato, is the outcome of a research on the figure of this composer that had begun in 2015. From this investigation, it emerged that no work of his has been published in modern notation until now. So the project started with a study on the sources and with the transcription of the third book of his madrigals, the only one that has been preserved in its entirety to this day. After a careful analysis of the work, it was possible to bring back to life this lost music, which turned out to be highly rich in nuances, contrasts and colours. So a missing piece of the musical history of the city of Prato and the Medici court of that time has finally been put back in its place. Elia Orlando conducts the Tuscæ Voces Ensemble, with the use of historical instruments.

Virtue and love: two vital aspects of Baroque thought and emotion, are explored here in this wide-ranging programme of composers from the so-called "secondo Barocco" (the late Baroque period, in other words). Virtue and love enjoy a volatile relationship, sometime supportive, more often perhaps in conflict.

The name of Vittore Veneziani is mainly associated with La Scala Opera House, where he was engaged as Chorus Master from 1921 to 1954. His fortunate Milanese idyll was abruptly interrupted in 1938 by the imposition of racial laws. Veneziani, being of Jewish religion, was obliged to flee to Switzerland, abandoning his profession as well as his post as choral conductor at the Synagogue and to Israelian School. When he came back to Italy, soon after Liberation was declared and La Scala lay in ruins, Veneziani resumed his activity with a memorable concert at La Scala on May 11th 1946 working side by side with Arturo Toscanini who had come back, too, from his American exile.

The recording of the two harpsichord sonatas by Bernardo Pasquini, master of the Italian style of the organ and harpsichord in the period between the end of the seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth century, is a particularly interesting cameo in the panorama of the music dedicated to the genre of the partimento, advanced practice of the basso continuo that in Italy formed the basis of compositional and keyboard teaching in the 18th century Neapolitan school. In fact the sonatas consist of only the bass lines on which the two performers must create the entire composition thanks to the technical and expressive expertise obtained from a consummate knowledge and experience of the performance practice of the time. Marina Scaioli and Francesco Tasini face this instrumental 'challenge’ on two Italian historical harpsichords copies: a Giovanni Ferrini and a Roberto and Federigo Cresci.

The Duo Zigiotti Merlante, (Sergio Zigiotti on mandolin and Fabiano Merlante on guitar), on this album are performing a series of nineteenth-century pieces of rare charm on various vintage instruments within a compendium of melodies inspired by amorous, operatic, exotic and clever themes. The three composers, Carlo Munier, Enrico Marucelli and Luigi Mozzani were leading figures of the Italian scene between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries both as virtuous and multi-instrumental mandolinists, teachers, directors or members of famous plectrum ensembles. Luigi Mozzani also founded a guitar school-workshop that, successful all over the world, was finally selected by the great Andrés Segovia that chose one of his instruments.

The endless genre of operatic fantasy, which explodes and spreads without embankments in the musical culture of the entire Italian nineteenth century, has already been extensively explored in various Tactus productions dedicated both to chamber and sacred music. This time, however, the main protagonists are the oboe and the English horn, fascinating orchestral instruments that, thanks to the great virtuoso from Palermo, Antonino Pasculli, take part in that great musical activity - attended by myriads of Italian and European composers - that unconditionally suffered the charm of Italian melodrama. In this case they are the immortal melodies of Giuseppe Verdi - one of the most successful opera composers of all time - inspiring the fantasies of Pasculli, in the interpretation (both acrobatic to the oboe and cantabile and expressive to the English horn) of the master Paolo Grazia accompanied by the Orchestra Senzaspine conducted by the masters Matteo Parmeggiani and Tommaso Ussardi.

The mezzo-soprano Elena De Simone and the Ensemble Il Mosaico are the interpreters of this production that continues the journey of Tactus in the precious rediscovery of various female characters forgotten by history, that played a fundamental role in the cultural and musical panorama of their time. One of these cases concerns the Milanese Maria Teresa Agnesi, a precocious musician and composer - she starts writing music and performing in the academies of her city already at an early age - who dedicated her works to the major political authorities of her world.
