Singer/Songwriter, Soft Rock, Folk Rock, R&B, Funk, Jazz

This is the way a Joan Armatrading best-of collection should be assembled in the first place. The numerous single-disc compilations never came close to being representative of her achievement as a recording artist. Culling 43 tracks over eight years and 11 albums is even better in many ways than issuing an Armatrading box set. All of the expected material from the early years is included on disc one, such as "Cool Blue Stole My Heart," "Travel So Far," "Dry Land," "Down to Zero," "Love and Affection," "Help Yourself," "Woncha Come on Home," "Show Some Emotion," "Willow," "Barefoot and Pregnant," "Bottom to the Top," "You Rope You Tie Me," "Your Letter," and many more, including "The Flight of the Wild Geese" from the soundtrack to the film. It covers Armatrading's prolific period from 1975-1979, where a lot of old hippies, now upwardly mobile professionals seeking mellow escapes from their relentless and often ruthless pursuit of "the good life," got off the bus and remained stuck, listening only to her early records along with those of the Jacksons, Eagles, and James Taylor.

You're the Inspiration: A Collection is the second album released by Peter Cetera for River North Records and the sixth album released as a solo artist. While labeled as a 'collection', the album is not really a compilation of 'Greatest Hits' but rather a collection of previously recorded duets, a few new songs and a few re-recordings of old Chicago hits.

Michael Bolton - Michael Bolton (1983)

The former Michael Bolotin changed his name but not his style on his initial effort for Columbia Records. Bolton had essayed hard-edged arena rock with his band Blackjack, and here he did much the same thing, shout-singing in his emotive whiskey bellow over slashing guitar power chords (frequently courtesy of Blackjack's Bruce Kulick and his brother Bob), icy keyboard fills, angelic backup choirs, and thundering rhythm sections, all intended to fill the hockey auditoriums of America alongside Journey and Foreigner. For all the clichés, Bolton was an undeniably involving singer, and songs like "Fools Game," the lead-off track and chart single, were satisfying pop efforts that suggested he might offer some competition to emerging mainstream rockers like Bryan Adams. As things would turn out, of course, the true key track was the cover of the Supremes' "Back in My Arms Again."

Richard's voice is practically flawless: it is emotional but restrained, versatile, strong and clear. The musical arrangements are pretty standard for adult contemporary music, but they do show enough creativity and variety to make the CD interesting. They are all pretty mellow, there's no "rock", but the songs don't all sound alike. Several contain just a tinge of country, but it's not overpowering. The CD as a whole washes over me with real feeling that will help keep me warm this winter.
