    Having already sampled the best of T-Bone Walker’s late 1940s recordings (T-Bone Jumps Again - JASMCD3149) and 1950s recordings (Get These Blues Off Me - JASMCD3051), Jasmine now turns the spotlight on the more obscure session work undertaken by the great guitarist when his career allowed. Spanning over twenty years from his post-war entrance as a singer with Les Hite’s popular West Coast orchestra and his guitar-for-hire stint with Freddie Slack’s swing band, through his early 1950s indie label session work backing California bluesmen Mercy Dee Walton and Roy Hawkins to his European rediscovery in the early 1960s, using his guitar and seldom-heard piano skills to back his fellow headliners Memphis Slim, Sonny & Brownie, Shakey Jake and John Lee Hooker, as well as performing in his own right at the American Folk Blues Festival in 1962.

    Known widely as 'Mama Africa', Johannesburg-born MIRIAM MAKEBA, of Xhosa and Swazi descent, was a controversial singer, songwriter, feminist and political activist, perhaps one of the most important black women of the 20th Century.A singer with a dynamic, wholly unique vocal range, she built a career in South Africa during the 1950s, largely as a member of an all-female vocal group, The Skylarks, and as a 'guest' member of the all-male Manhattan Brothers.She met Harry Belafonte in 1959, who encouraged her to move to New York, where he mentored her career and produced her early albums.Disc 1 of this 2-CD set features the pick of her 1950s recordings made in South Africa, between 1954-59, and includes her first international hit, 'Lovely Lies', recorded with The Manhattan Bros.Disc 2 comprises her earliest New York recordings, the LPs 'Miriam Makeba' (which featured 'The Click Song') and 'The Many Voices Of Miriam Makeba', plus a couple of sides recorded with Belafonte at Carnegie Hall.

    The Ventures are the most successful and influential instrumental group of all time, with worldwide record sales in excess of 110 million. The late 50s to the early 60s were the 'Golden Era' for R&R instrumentals, and as the first guitar driven instrumental group, their influence was immeasurable, providing the template for The Shadows and just about every other group who followed.
