This double CD presents a good opportunity to discover the symphonic works of the world-famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis (*1925), a living legend in his own country. It contains the Suite no. 1 for Piano and Orchestra and the Piano Concerto, written in the fifties, when Theodorakis was still at the Paris Conservatoire, and the Symphony no. 2, УThe Song of the EarthФ (based on Suite no. 1 and the ballet Antigone), which marks the composerТs return to his symphonic writing, after 20 years of struggle and suffering for his country and his people. Discover the first studio recording on CD of this landmark Symphony no. 2 and the fascinating Suite and Concerto, in unique recordings, made in 1982 on the occasion of performances at the Echternach International Festival (Luxembourg) and in Antwerp. Theodorakis himself conducts the RTL Symphony Orchestra, and Cyprien Katsaris demonstrates in all three works his legendary virtuosity and unsurpassed artistry.

In 1994 under his contract with Sony, Cyprien Katsaris travelled to Hamburg to partake of the beautiful acoustics of the Friedrich-Ebert Halle for the recording of a number of J. S. Bach’s works wherein we find the distinctive stamp of Italian music of the late XVIIth and early XVIIIth Centuries and the concert sound of flamboyant, virtuoso violins. Sony published some of these recordings in 1995 as part of the recital “Italy in Bach”.

Les Noces is a screaming, shrieking, flat-out masterpiece. Leonard Bernstein himself has referred to it as Stravinsky's greatest work, and listening to this incendiary performance, it's awfully hard to disagree. Scored for voices, four pianos, and percussion, the work provided the inspiration for the entire career of Orff (of Carmina Burana fame), but it's so much better as sheer music than anything Orff wrote. And what a cast! The pianists for this performance include Martha Argerich, Krystian Zimerman, Cyprien Katsaris, and Homero Francesch, four certified virtuoso performers, while the singers of the English Bach Festival Chorus really cover themselves with glory in both works. A stunner.
