Our Brilliant Careers: Cherry Red Rarities 1981-1983 Review by Richie Unterberger
This assortment of 22 odds and ends released by the Cherry Red label in the early '80s contains, as the liners rightly note, "tracks not previously available on CD, or now deleted, or just pretty hard to find." But it's not solely of interest as a rarity compilation, for Cherry Red was one of the more idiosyncratic and high-quality indie rock labels of the early '80s, and this also functions as a good overview of the range of sounds the label explored at the time.

The hugely well-respected and historically important Kinks seventh studio album Arthur Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire was released on 10th October 1969, and celebrates its 50th anniversary on 2019. 'Rock musical' in style and one of the most effective concept albums in rock history, the album was constructed by Kinks' frontman Ray Davies as the soundtrack to a subsequently cancelled Granada Television play. The album receiving almost unanimous acclaim upon its release. Rolling Stone 1969 - "Arthur is a masterpiece on every level, Ray Davies' finest hour. The Kinks' supreme achievement and the best British album of 1969".

Months after the release of the harrowing The Holy Bible, Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey James disappeared, leaving no trace of his whereabouts or his well-being. Ultimately, the remaining trio decided to carry on, releasing their fourth album, Everything Must Go, in 1996. Considering the tragic circumstances that surrounded it, Everything Must Go is the strongest, most focused, and certainly the most optimistic album the Manics ever released. Five of the songs feature lyrics Richey left behind before his disappearance, and while offering no motivation for his actions, they do hint at the depths of his despair.

When Fran Healy sings "Why did we wait so long" on "Mother," the opening song on Travis' seventh album, he could be addressing his band, which spent nearly five years between 2008's Ode to J. Smith and its 2013 follow-up, Where You Stand. The extra time off has done the band some good. Toward the end of the 2000s, Travis started to sag under their own weight, as the group slowly grew more ponderous, and while it certainly can't be said that Where You Stand is effervescent, it is more nimble than either Ode or The Boy with No Name, and it boasts a greater variety of tempos and textures, as well.

A celebration of the multi-faceted British alt. rock/pop scene which flourished 1992-1998, midway through attracting the term Brit Pop. Compiled by DJ, curator and contemporary scenester Martin Green, who ran the London club Smashing during the period. Artists such as Blur, Oasis, Pulp were all attendees, and the club became a breeding ground for many future bands. In parallel Martin compiled and co-produced the genre defining Loungecore compilation The Sound Gallery released on EMI in 1995, using many tracks which had populated the early club sets. Named after a joint-rolling technique, the British band Toploader evokes the hazy, feel-good vibe of the '70s with their keyboard-driven white soul anthems. Keyboardist and vocalist Joseph Washbourne, guitarist Dan Hipgrave, bassist Matt Knight, and drummer Rob Green were friends who, while hanging out night after night in their local pub, decided to form a band. In 1997, after the addition of second guitarist Julian Deane to the lineup, Toploader was born; the following year, the band was signed to Sony's U.K. division. In 1999, with a style reminiscent of the Faces, the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road-era Elton John, Toploader found themselves supporting former Jam frontman Paul Weller on his European tour. In May of that same year, the driving single "Achilles Heel" was released to favorable responses, and Toploader secured spots performing at both the Glastonbury and Reading festivals. Late 1999 saw the release of the second single, "Let the People Know," a joyous, dance-heavy tune which garnered the band comparisons to Jamiroquai. In February 2000, the band would release their most successful single yet, the George Drakoulias-produced "Dancing in the Moonlight," which would remain on the British charts well into 2001. In May 2000, Toploader's first full-length album, Onka's Big Monka, debuted at number five on the British charts and shortly thereafter, the band appeared on the popular television show Top of the Pops alongside Oasis and the Charlatans UK.
