Mercury Classics/Deutsche Grammophon has released the debut album of Austrian clarinettist Andreas Ottensamer, the first ever solo clarinettist to sign an exclusive agreement with the Yellow Label. Portraits – The Clarinet Album features concertos by Copland, Spohr and Cimarosa, plus arrangements of short pieces. Andreas Ottensamer is accompanied on the recording by the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
This superbly played recital with orchestra is a must-have for fanciers of the instrument, and one that takes us non-specialists into interesting repertoire beyond Mozart and Brahms. All the pieces nevertheless bunch around the Romantic period, emphasising the suitability of the clarinet's superb tone to emotion in full bloom. Andreas Ottensamer proves an ideal exponent of the sensibility as it spread beyond national boundaries. The work that is plum in the middle of the period is the concluding Spohr concerto that has a winning tunefulness and elegant figuration that reminds me a bit of Chopin's piano concertos. It is gently plangent without ever going in as soul-searching a direction as the Copland two-movement concerto, which has an unmistakeably autumnal feel. The scoring for string orchestra, harp and piano (used in the second movement after a scorching cadenza for the soloist) opens up a highly original sonority. It also sounds a bit like Stravinsky in the second movement, while the first is described in the insert notes as having 'a Hopper-like sadness' - an apt analogy which keeps the American location to the fore. Copland himself said: 'I think it will make everyone weep'. The Gershwin proves a suitably jaunty intro - perhaps it's a pity he didn't play the other two preludes as well, but as it stands it serves to set the Copland up as the main event. The Debussy then takes us into a very different world, while the shapely Cimarosa takes us into a classical mould; the overall effect is irrepressible, especially in the bright-as-a-button fast movements. Amy Beach's Berceuse is a gorgeous outpouring, the most romantic interlude of the whole recital. It has a reticence about it, but you feel its heart glowing under a slim-fitting outer casing.
