Long overdue Deluxe 2CD revamp for Kim Wilde’s fourth studio album, originally released in 1984 and a UK National Chart No.66 hit and No.22 in Germany (No.84 in the USA Billboard Hot 100) Includes the hit singles The Touch (UK, No 50, Germany No.29 and Holland No.20), The Second Time (UK No.29, Germany No.9, Switzerland No.7, USA No. 65 and Holland No.24) and Rage To Love (UK No.19, Germany No.45) Now comes complete with an incredible 16 bonus tracks including many ultra rare 12 and Extended mixes. Alongside the original LP artwork this release includes lyrics to all the songs, sleeve-notes by Steve Thorpe and the whole thing has been overseen by Kim’s official webmaster Marcel Rijs by the fans for the fans! Totally re-mastered by Tim Turan. Kim was the Most Successful British Solo Female Artist of the 80's (17 hit singles) and in France she is known as the Bridgette Bardot of Rock.
Following the disappointing sales of her previous album, the excellent but barely known Catch As Catch Can, the pouting pop princess Kim Wilde was dropped from Mickie Most's record label RAK, but quickly signed up again by the recording giant MCA in 1984. This was to be a long association with would keep her in hits until 1995.
The first studio album Kim that cut for MCA, 'Teases and Dares' failed to return her to the top of the charts. Her sales, in the UK at least, had been declining for some time, and all this record could manage was a disappointing no.66 chart position in Britain. However, the singles fared considerably better, with 'Rage to Love' hitting the top 20, 'The Second Time' peaking at no.29, and 'The Touch' making a more modest impact at no.56.
I'll be honest, whilst I'm a real Kim Wilde fan, and treasure my copy of 'Catch as Catch Can' as well as turn to 'The Greatest Hits' regularly, this is not my favourite album of this talented artist by any stretch. Not that it's bad, it really isn't, but memorable pop songs worth playing again and again are scarce. There's a lack of the really punchy melodies that had made her early records such a delight.
Once again, Kim's famous father Marty, and her younger brother Ricki provided her with most of the songs, but they'd come up with much stronger goods. Kim herself had by now turned to songwriting, and on her own had penned 'Fit In' and 'Shangri-La', both of which are, ironically, the two most memorable tracks. The atmospheric 'Suburbs Of Moscow' is another highlight, and the closing track, ''Thought It Was Goodbye' is a sweet enough ballad, but that's it as far as I can hear. Only Kim Wilde completists need seek this one out, a lukewarm first album on a new label, but there was of course much better to come from this girl as the Eighties moved forward.
In 2010, Cherry Pop, who have an excellent reputation for their superb re-issuing of Eighties albums and had begun to offer a few of Kim's, delivered this deluxe edition. As well as taking 'Teases and Dares' out of obscurity and giving it a superb sound remastering, a second CD is also offered, containing nine official 12''-inch versions of the songs which had only been available on the old vinyls. The first CD has the original album expanded with seven bonus tracks, including the once very scarce B sides, 'Lovers On A Beach', 'Putty in Your Hands', and 'Turn It On', which was good enough to be on the album. In addition, we also have a very nice booklet, which includes detailed liner notes by Steve Thorpe, and lyrics to all of the songs.
As this is such a good re-issue from Cherry Red, and the added tracks are worth hearing, I have decided to rate this album four stars instead of the three which I would given to the original.Review by For Tomorrow 24, Amazon.co.uk
