'Backstage' was Cher's final album for Liberty Records. Released in 1968, it is a collection of mainly covers such as 'Reason To Believe' and 'Do You Believe In Magic'. 'Golden Hits' is what it says, featuring 'Bang Bang' and 'All I Really Want To Do' among other hits. Digitally remastered, slipcased and with extensive new notes.

This two-on-one CD is a wonderful representation of Cher's early years as a recording artist on the Imperial label, milking together her 1968 studio album 'Backstage' with 'Golden Greats', her original greatest hits LP from the same year. 'Backstage' was Cher's fifth album which didn't meet with any chart action anywhere in the world, and is largely a collection of contemporary cover versions, including fine renditions of Tim Hardin's 'Reason to Believe', Bob Dylan's 'Masters of War' (my favourite of Cher's Dylan covers), and the Burt Bacharach and Hal David penned 'A House Is Not a Home', which really take advantage of Cher's rich and powerful vocals. This was first Cher album to not be produced entirely by Sonny, and I have to say the multi-production on here wasn't consistently great, especially on the opening track 'Go Now', which became a hit for The Moody Blues, but Cher's voice is in fine form, and it's that gift which is the main attraction. As this LP is still a rarity, avid fans need to purchase this album, released in 2007, to be able to obtain it in full, and have the tracks in chronological order. 'Golden Greats' contains all of Cher's most important recordings up to that point in her career, including her debut hit single 'All I Really Wanna Do', which was also a Dylan original, 'Bang Bang', one of the many songs written for her by the previously mentioned producer, boyfriend and later husband Sonny Bono, and her definitive rendition of 'Sonny', which she surly sang with him in mind. Again, there are plenty of covers on this album besides the aforementioned couple, and her delivery of 'Alfie', which Cilla Black had a big hit with here in Britain, is superb, and although I favour Marianne Faithfull's version of 'Come and Stay with Me', I've always enjoyed Cher's as well. The tracks on this CD are not in the order of the original LP, and because 'Take Me For A Little While', which was featured on 'Golden Greats' was also one of the tracks on 'Backstage', it was not repeated here, and replaced instead by 'I Feel Something in the Air'. As well as a lot of great music to delight Sixties and ''Flower-Power'' fans, and a chance to hear Cher as she was at the start of her career, this is a lovingly put-together package, with great digital remastering on each of the tracks, a booklet containing nice pictures and detailed liner notes, and housed in a slipcase which gives it a real classy feel. Cher, like many of the girl singers of the decade was simply given the songs people wanted her to record (in this case Sonny), and had little artistic control, but she could sure deliver a good tune, and her voice was to only get stronger and stronger in subsequent decades. This is not my favourite release, but I would never dismiss it, because there are some early treasures to be found.
