This Milwaukee, Wisconsin band are best remembered by their 1967 single "Stop & Listen." What is not known about them is their 1969 studio recordings made at Pacific High Recorders in San Francisco. Shag laid down some excellent tracks during down time at the studio while the Grateful Dead were finishing up "Workingman's Dead." Tracks from Shag's "1969" have never been released and their use of the flute a full two years ahead of Jethro Tull's popularization of the instrument shows their versatility and raw talent.

Tab Benoit is a Louisiana-based singer, guitarist, and environmental preservationist who first appeared on the Southern blues scene in the early 1990s. His Cajun-inflected blues-rock sound won international notice on 1992's Nice & Warm and three more albums for Justice Records. He signed with Telarc for 2002's Whiskey Store with Jimmy Thackery, and his own Wetlands, a blues meditation on the complex, imperiled environment of southern Louisiana. A highly versatile player, Benoit's singing voice has drawn comparisons to Otis Redding's, while his playing style readily reflects the influences of Albert Collins, Albert King, and Jimi Hendrix. 2003's Sea Saint Sessions offered a star-studded guest list that included Cyril Neville and George Porter, Jr. 2007's Power of the Pontchartrain registered with audiences internationally. 2010's Medicine won three Blues Music awards. Benoit stopped recording for 14 years to devote himself to protecting Louisiana's wetlands. In 2024, he returned with the self-produced I Hear Thunder on his own Whiskey Bayou label.

After his one-album stint at Asylum Records with Luxury You Can Afford in 1978, Joe Cocker was without a record label until 1981, when he signed to Island Records. Island head Chris Blackwell took him to the Compass Point studios in the Bahamas, where he recorded a 12" single, "Sweet Little Woman"/"Look What You've Done," released in May 1981, then continued working on a full-length album. When that album, Sheffield Steel, appeared a year later, listeners could be forgiven for imagining, during the instrumental portions, that they were hearing not a Joe Cocker disc, but rather a Robert Palmer record.

With Wolstenholme's keyboards pushed back in the mix, and strangely missing the harmonies that enriched their earlier work, Octoberon is something of a departure for the band. While Wolstenholme's stately "Ra" shows a dabbling in mysticism and the soaring sound of their previous work, most of the album is a strangely glum affair. John Lees adopts a pub rock sound in his compositions, although "May Day" manages to veer unexpectedly into a glorious choral and organ arrangement. "Polk Street Rag," despite its name, is a slick rocker about a sordid X-rated movie house in San Francisco. There's a black humor throughout, as in this brutally funny line from "Suicide?": "Heard a voice shouting 'Don't jump, please for God's sake let me move my car."

For his Blue Note debut, Maestro, Brazilian composer Moacir Santos assiduously avoids his homeland's familiar bossa nova and samba rhythms, instead reinventing lesser-known idioms like baiao and frevo to create his own complex yet pulsating signatures and cadences. Opening with "Nana," easily Santos' most familiar and oft-recorded composition, Maestro quickly proves an uncommonly vast canvas for a who's who of Los Angeles session greats including Joe Pass, Clair Fischer, and Don Menza, all of whom explore new territory throughout the LP. For all their depth and intricacy, Santos' songs never box in their players, but allow them the space and the tools necessary to spread out.

After cathartic statements like Homogenic, the role of Selma in Dancer in the Dark, and the film's somber companion piece, Selmasongs, it's not surprising that Björk's first album in four years is less emotionally wrenching. But Vespertine isn't so much a departure from her previous work as a culmination of the musical distance she's traveled; within songs like the subtly sensual "Hidden Place" and "Undo" are traces of Debut and Post's gentle loveliness, as well as Homogenic and Selmasongs' reflective, searching moments.
