Onda Sonora is a production that aims to show how a group of passionate and committed young people can perform a mature and eclectic repertoire. They range from monumental classical pieces to more contemporary and popular music. When you listen, you can hardly tell the difference between the performances of these young musicians and those of professional orchestras.

The first track of the album is On Fire by Michael Geisler, an Austrian composer and conductor. It’s a piece in 4/4 time with a bright sound and an energetic start, similar to a fanfare. The melody is catchy and supported by a funky rhythm, with lively interjections. The drum solo adds a pause in the song’s flow before picking up the pace again. The piece ends with a final presentation of the melody, with energetic contributions from tenor and baritone saxophones.

The second piece performed by the orchestra is Danse Bacchanale by Camille SaintSaëns, taken from the opera “Samson and Delilah.” The composer deviates from French grand opera norms, creating an orchestral composition characterized by harmonic exploration and rhythmic shifts. The Danse Bacchanale, a dance in 2/4 time, depicts Philistine celebrations after Samson’s defeat. It starts with a soprano solo, featuring oriental harmony and a festive atmosphere. The music builds in intensity, foreshadowing the temple’s destruction.

The third piece, titled For You! by conductor Domenico Luciano was composed during the pandemic lockdown. It’s a sweet and melancholic piece expressing feelings experienced during surreal times. The melody is introduced gradually, with each section of the orchestra taking turns. Near the end, there’s an improvisation featuring the baritone, tenor, and soprano saxophones, leading to a powerful finale.

Following that, there’s Tico Tico no Fuba by Zequinha de Abreu & Aloysio de Oliveira, a Brazilian choro style piece known for its fast and cheerful rhythm, syncopations, and counterpoints. It depicts a bird attempting to steal cornmeal from residents’ yards, capturing the frenzy and lightness of the scene.

The fifth track is Struggle for Pleasure by Wim Mertens, originally a minimalist piece composed for piano. It’s adapted for orchestra, featuring four melodic lines that gradually buildin complexity, mimicking the piano’s unique touch.

Then comes Conga del Fuego Nuevo by Arturo Marquez, a Latin Americaninspired piece blending Conga rhythms with classical orchestraon, showcasing rhythmic and harmonic contrasts.

The seventh track, A Little Love Song, is another piece by Michael Geisler, originally composed for a wedding. It’s a sweet and melodic piece featuring various sections of the orchestra.

Next is Formula One Theme by Brian Tyler, incorporating electronic instrumentation to simulate the sounds of racing cars, a departure for the orchestra.

The ninth track is Hungarian Dances No. 5 by Johannes Brahms, a reinterpretation of Hungarian folk dances infused with lively rhythms and dynamic shifts.

The album concludes with Canta Napule, a medley of Neapolitan classical music arranged innovatively to showcase the orchestra’s versatility and technical prowess.

This arrangement highlights the orchestra’s flexibility and expressive potential, demonstrating their ability to perform even the most ephemeral pieces with rigor, worthy of the grandest stages.
