As a skilled practitioner of his craft, Joseph Labitzky gained global acclaim for his waltz and polka compositions. He was a conductor and orchestra manager who transformed the musical entertainment of the spa in Karlsbad (today: Karlovy Vary) into a spa orchestra, later to evolve into the present-day Karlsbad Symphony Orchestra through his efforts and the contributions of his son, August. His programming expertise engaged audiences with a wide variety of light music, operas, symphonies, choral-orchestral pieces, and chamber music. The inherent invitation to dance within his musical creations is unmistakable!

The balanced nature of Labitzky’s compositions in melody, harmony, rhythm, and instrumentation can be attributed to his thorough training. Initially, he learned from the choirmaster and pedagogue Karl Veit in Petschau, and later, during the winter seasons of 1822 to 1824, he studied under Peter von Winter in Munich. Peter von Winter (1754–1825) was a member of the Mannheim Court Orchestra. In 1787, he became Vice-Kapellmeister, and in 1798, he became the Kapellmeister of the court orchestra in Munich.
