The fairy Melinde has for ten years been estranged from her husband, Count Arnulf of Montabaur, as a result of his ambitions for their son: he wished to place the boy on the throne of neighbouring Brabant by usurping his niece, Princess Ida. Melinde has hidden their son from his father to protect him from his bad influence. Although Arnulf believes
she has killed him, the young man is living disguised as a minstrel, Palmerin, who owns a remarkable magic harp.
In taking the boy from his father, Melinde received help from the evil fire-spirit Sutur, who now has some ugly and dehumanizing power over her. In a rash and much regret- ted moment, while filled with a hatred for her husband induced in her by Sutur, she swears that, should she ever be reconciled with Arnulf, whom in reality she still loves, then she will yield to Sutur and give up her own magic powers. Arnulf overhears this oath and warns her never to break it. He then leaves, at Melinde’s command, to conjure up a picture of Palmerin on the mountainside.
