This reminder is intended for those responsible for the Secretariat of culture of the city of Recife. One of the greatest lovers of frevo and also one of its great popularizers, was the musician, arranger and conductor from São Paulo Aristides Zacarias. Aristides was from Jaboticabal, where he was born on January 5, 1911. His clarinet studies he did with Pedro Moura, father of the no less outstanding musician Paulo Moura.
After playing to animate cinemas, in 1934, Zacarias moved to the capital of São Paulo. There he played for a period in the famous “Italia Fausta " in exchange only for money to pay for a meager meal and a place to sleep.
Later, he moved to Santos, where he got a job in the “Cabaré Coliseu” and later also played on ships that made coastal tourism.
In 1936 he traveled to Rio de Janeiro. He brightened for a long time with his presence the orchestra of the “Cassino Da Urca”. That same year he made his first recording accompanying the singer Almirante. He then went to work at Rádio Nacional as part of the orchestra of the demanding conductor Radamés Gnattali with whom he toured Argentina in 1941.
In 1942, he returned to Rio de Janeiro, becoming part of the ensemble of Claude Austin, who performed at the “casino of the Copacabana Palace”.
In 1943, he recorded his first record as an orchestra director, directing the orchestra the Midnigthers, which was organized at the request of Victor to play American compositions and thereby supply the market, as American musicians were on strike at that time. The orchestra had three pistonists, four sax, two trombones, rhythm and vocalist Nilo Sérgio. At the time they recorded the foxtrots” My devotion “by William and Napton and” I'll never know " by Warren and Gordon, both major hits.
In the same year 1943, he made his first recordings, conducting his own orchestra. On October 10 of that year he recorded six songs for Victor, among which frevos “Vira as máquinas”, by Marambá, “Cadê você”, by Levino Ferreira and “a hora é essa”, by Zumba, in addition to frevos-songs “Primeira bateria”, by Capiba and “Bye, bye, my baby”, by Nélson Ferreira and “Cai, cai”, by Marambá, with vocals by Carlos Galhardo.
From there, the orchestra of maestro Zacarias, or according to his baptismal name given by the labels “Zaccarias and His Orchestra” recorded frevos of the most consecrated composers of Pernambuco: Nelson Ferreira, Capiba, Zumba, Levino Ferreira, Antônio Sapateiro, Lourival Oliveira, Lídio Macacão, etc. During the fifties, for seven years in a row he came to shine the Carnival balls of the then chic Clube Internacional do Recife.
The orchestra of maestro Zacharias was a beauty! It competed on an equal footing with the great orchestras of Pernambuco. I think his was even superior to some that existed around here. And he in the recordings gave his private clarinet show, considering that he was one of the exponents of this instrument in Brazil.
