Lectures on Numerical Methods

Lectures on Numerical Methods by I. P. Mysovskih
English | PDF | 1969 | 351 Pages | ISBN : 9401174857 | 18 MB

The course of lectures on numerical methods (part I) given by the author to students in the numerical third of the course of the mathematics mechanics department of Leningrad State University is set down in this volume. Only the topics which, in the opinion of the author, are of the greatest value for numerical methods are considered in this book. This permits making the book comparatively small in size, and, the author hopes, accessible to a sufficiently wide circle of readers. The book may be used not only by students in daily classes, but also by students taking correspondence courses and persons connected with practical computa tion who desire to improve their theoretical background. The author is deeply grateful to V. I. Krylov, the organizer ofthe course on numerical methods (part I) at Leningrad State University, for his considerable assistance and constant interest in the work on this book, and also for his attentive review of the manuscript. The author is very grateful to G. P. Akilov and I. K. Daugavet for a series of valuable suggestions and observations. The Author Chapter I NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF EQUATIONS In this chapter, methods for the numerical solution of equations of the form P(x) = 0, will be considered, where P(x) is in general a complex-valued function.

Moving Interfaces in Crystalline Solids

Moving Interfaces in Crystalline Solids by Franz Dieter Fischer
English | PDF (True) | 2005 | 263 Pages | ISBN : 3211238999 | 11.5 MB

Moving Interfaces in Solids are typically phase boundaries and grain or subgrain boundaries. Continuum thermodynamics and continuum mechanics are applied to explain the motion process. Related numerical and experimental concepts are dealt with. Experts from material physics and mechanics bridge the gap between these fields. The reader is offered a common view of interface mtion in a unique representation. Examples are presented for various material systems.

Mechanics of Material Forces by Paul Steinmann, Gérard A. Maugin
English | PDF (True) | 2005 | 331 Pages | ISBN : 0387262601 | 13.6 MB

The notion dealt with in this volume of proceedings is often traced back to the late 19th-century writings of a rather obscure scientist, C. V. Burton. A probable reason for this is that the painstaking de ciphering of this author's paper in the Philosophical Magazine (Vol. 33, pp. 191-204, 1891) seems to reveal a notion that was introduced in math ematical form much later, that of local structural rearrangement. This notion obviously takes place on the material manifold of modern con tinuum mechanics.

Fundamentals of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information

Fundamentals of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information by Peter Lambropoulos , David Petrosyan
English | PDF (True) | 2007 | 326 Pages | ISBN : 354034571X | 2.7 MB

Another book on Quantum Optics? or Quantum Information? Well, not - actly. A more descriptive title might be: “A guided tour through basic qu- tum mechanics, quantum optics and quantum information”. Even better, a few words on its origin and our motivation for undertaking the task might be useful to the potential reader in deciding whether to turn the pages beyond this preface. For more than ten years now, a graduate course on quantum optics has been taught in the physics department of the University of Crete. Spanning two semesters, it originally consisted of a collection of topics representative of what can be found in the numerous by now excellent books on quantum optics. Over the last four years or so,however, the course acquired a gradually increasing segment of what is broadly referred to as quantum information, whichatthispointisapproximatelyhalfofthematerial.Inevitably, thetopics on standard quantum optics had to be reduced or compressed accordingly.

Quantum Mechanics by K. T. Hecht
English | PDF | 2000 | 768 Pages | ISBN : 0387989196 | 105.7 MB

Intended for beginning graduate students, this text takes the reader from the familiar coordinate representation of quantum mechanics to the modern algebraic approach, emphsizing symmetry principles throughout. After an introduction of the basic postulates and techniques, the book discusses time-independent perturbation theory, angular momentum, identical particles, scattering theory, and time-dependent perturbation theory. It concludes with several lectures on relativistic quantum mechanics and on many-body theory.

Theory and Applications of the Poincaré Group by Y. S. Kim

Special relativity and quantum mechanics, formulated early in the twentieth century, are the two most important scientific languages and are likely to remain so for many years to come. In the 1920's, when quantum mechanics was developed, the most pressing theoretical problem was how to make it consistent with special relativity. In the 1980's, this is still the most pressing problem.

Inviscid Fluid Flows by Hilary Ockendon
English | PDF | 1983 | 156 Pages | ISBN : 0387908242 | 9 MB

Applied Mathematics is the art of constructing mathematical models of observed phenomena so that both qualitative and quantitative results can be predicted by the use of analytical and numerical methods. Theoretical Mechanics is concerned with the study of those phenomena which can be ob served in everyday life in the physical world around us. It is often characterised by the macroscopic approach which allows the concept of an element or particle of material, small compared to the dimensions of the phenomena being modelled, yet large compared to the molecular size of the material.

Dynamics of Extended Celestial Bodies and Rings by Jean Souchay
English | PDF | 2006 | 217 Pages | ISBN : 3540280243 | 6.2 MB

Taking both a theoretical and observational perspective, this book is an introduction to recent developments in the field of celestial mechanics. It emphasizes the application to extended celestial bodies and devotes much attention to rotational aspects. In particular, it explains the state of art for accurate modelling of the rotation of celestial bodies such as the Earth, the Moon, and Mercury, which involves principles related to hydrodynamics and geodesy.
