During the harsh winter months of 1939-40 General Siilasvuo and his wilderness warriors won a brilliant victory at the most endangered section of the northern Finnish front in Suomussalmi. In Kuhmo the Finnish counter-tactics were developed further during heavy fighting; a superiorly equipped Russian division as well as a skier brigade were halted, encircled and partially annihilated by the numerically weaker forces. These battles are portrayed by the section's commander with the same sovereign mastery of the subject, the same pattern-like clarity and exalted austere style art, which characterized his previous book about the Battles of Suomussalmi.
The Winter War was a Russo - Finnish war fought in the winter of 1939-40. This documentary is a first-hand account of the battles in Kuhmo, northern Finland, written by the commander of the Finnish troops, Liutenant General Hjalmar Siilasvuo (1892-1947) – Colonel at the time of the Winter War. The book provides a viewpoint both to the tactical maneuvering of the troops and to the fates of the individual men.
