§ Goyen began his apprenticeship at the age of ten and he studied under six masters. Esaias van de Velde of Haarlem was the instructor who influenced him the most.
§ In 1632, he opened a studio at Den Haag (The Hague). Nicolaes van Berchem, Jan Steen, and Adriaen van der Kabel were his students.
§ Goyen's daughter, Margriet, married Jan Steen on Oct 3, 1649.
§ He also worked as an auctioneer, an appraiser of art and a real-estate investor to help support his family.
§ Goyen speculated on tulip bulbs, an exotic plant from Turkey at the time. In 1637, he suffered severe losses from the tulip market crash. He never recovered financially from this and died insolvent.
§ Goyen’s paintings rarely brought high prices; but he made up for the value of his paintings by increasing production.
